on to the interview…

Digilish is lucky enough to get a quick interview with the Acoustic Princess - Princess Velasco. Princess is still a relative newcomer to the music industry, being in it for about 2 years but has quickly gained lots of ground and an ever growing fan base. She is considered to be one of the best pure singers out there.

Growing up:

Digilish: How early in your childhood did you start singing? Was it just a natural thing for you?
Princess: My Mom said that I started singing when I started talking. Yes, I guess it is a natural thing for me. I remember singing (and dancing) to my Mom’s cassette tapes for hours in front of a mirror when I was about 3 or 4 years old. :)

D: You’ve mentioned the Corrs as your all-time favorite act. Who else has influenced your music?
P: What I call “chick rock” artists like Alanis Morissette, Plumb, Avril Lavigne, Jewel and rock/alternative bands like Incubus, Lifehouse and U2. I also liked acts like Swing Out Sister and Stinge. My newer fave artists are Taylor Swift, John Mayer, The Script and so many more..

Career:

D: How fast was the whole process after signing with Vicor to producing your 1st album and its release?
P: Whirlwind fast! :) I signed the artist management contract with Viva and Tita Sherbet Ilacad, plus the recording contract with Vicor around March 2009, we recorded my album Addicted to Acoustic (produced by Tito Sunny Ilacad) between April and May, then it was released by June! So a total of 3 months from signing to the release of the album. :)

D: What were your expectations when you signed that contract? Has it all been exactly as you imagined?
P: It was so much more than I expected. I have been singing for most of my life and never really expected that I will still be able to make a career out of it. Up to now I still feel like it’s a dream.. A very good dream! :)

D: Did you expect the reception you’ve received so far with your albums? What thoughts were going through your head prior to addicted to acoustic’s (launch) back in august 2009?
P: Honestly, I did not expect the kind of reception or support I received for Addicted to Acoustic. It was all really overwhelming.. The album was released in June and it was received well in terms of sales. Before I was officially launched as the artist behind “Addicted” in August on ASAP ‘09, I was kinda scared and of course nervous on how people will receive me as the singer behind the album.

Princess’ original “Don’t Go”

D: How about after its release and the success your albums have had - what are your thoughts now?
P: I’m very thankful for all the support. Of course the people who helped me are very instrumental to the albums’ success. From the Viva and Vicor executives, to Mr. and Mrs. Sunny and Sherbet Ilacad, the musicians, technicians, and staff who helped with making and promoting the album. And most of all the fans who bought the album and appreciate my music.

D: Your voice suits acoustic music really well as it’s nice and relaxing. What other genre’s are you hoping to get into if possible?
P: Thanks, I always get comments that my voice is relaxing and helps them go to sleep.. Haha! Parang Ibong Adarna. :) Other genres that I think will naturally suit my voice are pop, ballads, smooth jazz, or even (mild) r&b. What do you think? Maybe you have ideas. :)

D: You’ve recently been added to ASAP XV as a Sessionista! How cool is that?
P: Super cool! :) I’ve been jamming with them onstage for a year now and I’m still amazed that they put me in that group of very talented singers. And they’ve become my friends. No pressure at all, it’s like we’re only jamming together whenever we perform.

D: You’ve been working really hard the past 2 years with appearances here and there. How do you keep up with the lifestyle? I’d have collapsed by now if I had your schedule.
P: It only seems hectic when you see it on Facebook haha. :) Of course I get some rest whenever I can. And singing/performing does not really feel like work for me. I kinda had to adjust to this kind of lifestyle coz I used to have an 8-5 job. But hey, I’m not complaining, not at all! :) This is so much better.

D: Can you give us an idea of what your normal week is like? - My sched is somewhat unpredictable. There are weeks when I’m not too busy with work, and there are some when my sched is super hectic. Baliktad ang sched ko with people who work sa office. Mondays are usually my “weekends.” On weekdays, if I don’t have shows or any kind of work, I go the gym or to my derma and basically pamper myself. You know that I go online almost everyday to answer posts and tweets from my supporters. And when I have free time, I meet up with friends and go out and watch movies. My weekends are usually busy with shows and of course ASAP Rocks on Sunday.

D: 9. What are your future plans? Any new albums getting recorded?

P:I’m still promoting my new album “Acoustic Princess” so I don’t think I’ll be recording anytime soon. Maybe next year. :) In the meantime I’ll be focusing on doing shows and start writing new songs again.

D: If you had a choice to work with any artist(s) - who would he/she/they be?
P:Oh, there are so many artists that I want to work with! :) Besides the Sessionistas, I would also love to work with Sarah Geronimo, Arnel Pineda, Gary V, Gloc 9, ang dami pa! If it’s foreign, shempre Taylor Swift, John Mayer and U2 hahaha!
